The Brief
A high-floor balcony handed over as bare plaster and screed. The owners wanted it to feel like part of the apartment rather than a ledge outside it — comfortable underfoot, and green to look at from the living room.
The Challenge
- 01No planting depth, and a load limit on the balcony slab
- 02Wind and hard afternoon light at height
- 03Waterproofing that no fixing was allowed to break
- 04Irrigation running without a floor drain of its own
Our Approach
Why it is like this
The green wall hangs on a frame held off the plaster, so every fixing sits above the waterproof line and the wall behind stays dry and ventilated.
Money plant and syngonium make up most of the planting. Both are light, shallow-rooted and content in the shade the balcony falls into for half the day — a heavier palette would have needed depth the slab could not carry.
A single drip line feeds the top row and works its way down through the pockets to the sill. It uses little enough water that the balcony's existing outlet takes the runoff without a new drain.
