The Brief
A narrow court between two buildings, in full view of everyone passing and doing nothing at all. The brief was to make it worth looking at, in a space too tight to walk into.
The Challenge
- 01A court too narrow to occupy — made to be seen, not entered
- 02Very little daylight reaching the lower half
- 03Pump and plumbing access to stay reachable behind the stone
- 04Splash to be kept off the planting on either return
Our Approach
Why it is like this
The court is treated as a single elevation. A polished granite sheet carries a thin film of water down its face, lit from below so the stone holds up at night as well as in daylight.
Planting frames the stone rather than competing with it. Money plant in pocket panels climbs both returns and runs across the head of the opening, closing the frame on three sides.
Foliage was chosen for low light. Nothing here flowers, and nothing depends on sun this court will never get.
