The Brief
The terrace was a working edge of the hotel — a mesh fence, a plastered parapet and a view of the buildings behind. Guests using it in the evening needed something to look at other than the boundary.
The Challenge

Our Approach
Why it is like this
The wall is planted for contrast rather than colour. Dracaena, spider plant and purple tradescantia hold their difference under artificial light, where a green-on-green scheme would flatten into one mass.
It stands on its own frame in front of the fence, at a height that cuts the sightline from a seated guest to the building behind without closing the terrace in.
Uplighting from the parapet does the rest. Lit from below, the foliage reads as depth, and the mesh above it falls away into the dark.
