The Brief

The forecourt sat between the hospital entrance and a busy road, finished in bare concrete and left over from construction. The hospital wanted it to feel calm and cared for from the moment someone steps out of a car.

The Challenge

  1. 01A raw construction surface with no depth to plant into
  2. 02Direct exposure to road noise, dust and headlights
  3. 03A surface that had to stay clean and walkable for patients
  4. 04Almost no maintenance time available from hospital staff
  5. 05Work carried out around an entrance that stayed open

Our Approach

Why it is like this

There was no soil to work with, so the whole forecourt is built above the slab. Turf covers the ground plane and the planting sits in large moulded pots, which let the space be finished without excavation or new waterproofing.

Areca palms do the screening. Lined along the parapet and the compound edge, they filter the road at eye level while staying narrow enough to leave the walking route clear.

White pots against green ground were chosen to read from a distance. The forecourt needed to look cared for from the road, not only from inside it.

The Garden

A row of areca palms in white pots against the forecourt wall
Palms screening the boundary wall on the far side of the court
Potted palms beside the turf-treaded entrance stair
Palms and turf wrapping the forecourt below the entrance stair
